So there is one word I despise as I human being: the “p” word that refer to undergarments (I can’t even type it). As a Dietitian I have a longer list of words that I despise: diet, fat, superfoods, Dr. Oz, gluten free… the list goes on but those are my real offenders.
I get really miffed when the media, and people in the media take a topic and sensationalize it to death, and over-complicate it.
“Superfoods” for instance. Emphasizing or focusing on the imaginary powers of one food, or a list of 10 foods is not going to “fix you”. I can see the benefits of marketing fruits and vegetables as extremely beneficial- because it’s true, however they are more beneficial when eaten on a regular basis. What I find not so beneficial is the corresponding mark-up in price with these “super foods”.
I also think some good information is lost in the sensation-translation. My favorite is cherries. I once saw Dr. Oz recommend eating cherries as frequently as possible because of their amazing health benefits. Guess what. If you are someone who doesn’t eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, fiber, and then decide to eat half a pound of cherries in one day- you will be in the bathroon….for a signficant amount of time.
I tell my patients that a good food doesn’t become a great food by eating excessive amounts.
There are no superfoods. There foods that are much more nutrient dense than others. I also encourage my patient’s to eat a rainbow of colors. The richness and varieties of color indicate varieties of different vitamins and minerals. Eating a varieties of these foods give us antioxidants, other vitamins, minerals, and fiber. And again these foods are nutrient dense we get a lot of “good stuff” for the calories we take in.
Also it doesn’t have to break your bank to do this. You can buy frozen vegetables that are flash frozen, and without sauces. Same thing for fruit.
Remember it’s all about balance. For a fruit and veggie or “freggie” novice find a few freggies you like or want to try and work on slowly integrating more of them in your diet. Got kids? Make it an activity and maybe pick a new one to try and try is a family.
What are your favorite
superfoods fruits and veggies?
Is there are fruit or vegetable you have always wanted to try- but are intimidate by?
