Mini Vacay to Northern Michigan

After my Big Ten race last Saturday – I hopped in my little panda mobile and headed to the mitten for a little R and R.

Got to spend some time with family and friends, which was fantastic. On Sunday my madre and I headed “up north” to Bear Lake, Michigan. A beautiful little town about an hour south of Traverse City.

Some of my extended family members vacation there each year so my mom and I spent a little time with them before heading back to “the real world”.

I was an only child for the better part of my life (I have acquired some step siblings later on) and my cousins were basically my sisters growing up and they have small children now – who I do not get to see as often as I would like, so it was great to catch up with them.

One of my favorite vacation spots will always be Northern Michigan. When I was little my mom and dad would pack me into a car for a week long vacation that consisted of driving around the Great Lakes in very “Clark Griswald-esque” manner (there were always mishaps).

My favorite parts of vacation would be passing through Bear Lake to see my aunt, uncle and cousins. Later on when we were older my cousins and I took “girls trips” to Bear Lake before each of them got married. So not only does Northern Michigan make me incredibly nostalgic but it’s also beautiful.

Frankfort is another beautiful Michigan town right on Lake Michigan with a ton of small shops and cute places to eat. Then of course there is Traverse City- best known for its Cherries and wine- two of my favorite things.

Not to mention the drive along the “west coast” of Michigan is GORGEOUS.

On top of that there are so many things to do: shop, eat drink, kayaking, canoeing, boating, fishing, wine tasting. I promise you – if you are a runner, walker, cyclist – you would love it, Michigan is so scenic and beautiful.

Shameless plug for the State of Michigan is now over.

On Monday we traveled up to Frankfort for a little shopping, and indulging. I say indulging because there is a Kilwins in Frankfort, and if you’re from Michigan and you hear Kilwins you think of a few things immediately: fudge, ice cream, chocolate treats. They did not disappoint.

I indulged in some salted caramel ice cream (ummm as amazing as it sounds), and the savory truffles. If you’re an adventurous foodie I suggest the truffles.

Before taking off my mom and I were lured into a local shop in Bear Lake. They had signs out by the road claiming they had coffee, and all Michigan products. The store is called “Wee Bee Jammin” It is really cute and they have a website so you should totes check it out. I purchased some fresh zucchini, some garlic and dill pickles, and some Red Hot Raspberry Jam.
