What’s In My Fridge – an RD Edition

So since I spend greater than half of my day providing people suggestions on what to eat, how to prepare it etc. I get A LOT of questions in the neighborhood of “What do you eat?” “Do you follow a meal plan?” Etc.

I am predominantly on the “see-food meal plan” I get hungry, I see food, I make it, I eat it. Boom.

I’ve seen other bloggers do this so I thought I’d give it a whirl. And as you will see my refrigerator really highlights the idea that I am a dietitian with a human side (spoiler alert there is a lot of beer).

I’ll start with the freezer door:


Basically what you are seeing here is a giant cluster of frozen fruits and vegetables (various varieties: kale, strawberries, spinach, peppers etc). You are also seeing some Ben and Jerry’s frozen yogurt, bread crumbs, and frozen fillets of fish: salmon, pollack, and tilapia. And lastly there is bacon.

In the freezer itself:



Again more frozen meat: chicken, tilapia, salmon, shrimp, and scallops. You will also see some frozen leftovers, such as stuffed peppers and various other leftovers I have made too much of. You will also see more frozen fruit and veggies, again of various brands and types of fruit/veggie. Frozen waffles, and frozen My Bread (gluten and dairy free pizza crusts/bread) both are great in a pinch – the waffles I use for breakfasts and spread peanut butter on them. The MyBread is great not just for pizzas but for dipping. In terms of treats, yes you will see some mini ice cream sandwiches and pizza rolls. Even RDs need treats!

In the fridge:



The left side of the fridge is “mine”. I didn’t bother doing a door shot as I can sum it up in several foods: beer, lemons, mustard, and hot sauce. My “side” of the fridge is also a mess. In that mess is a hodge podge: vanilla and plain Greek yogurt, raspberry kefir, eggs, egg whites, tortillas, lite shredded cheese, grapefruit, avocados, cauliflower, almond butter, coconut or almond milk, as well as individual chocolate Silks, baby carrots, Sriracha, a monster, and goat cheese.

So as you can see, yeah I have a butt ton of healthy proteins, veggies, and fruit. I keep things like eggs, butter (although I have started playing around with ghee- but I’ll get to that another time), almond milk, yogurt, and lemons on hand all the time for cooking.

I’m not a huge fan of bread but I do like my tortillas, waffles, and English muffins.

However I am a fan of beer, and ice cream.

In terms of brands I typically shop at either Trader Joes, Mariano’s, and Whole Foods. Whatever store I go to typically depends on what I need.

I essentially survive on frozen meats, and vegetables in terms of “meal planning”. To plan my meals I essentially use the plate method- I pick a vegetable, a carb, and a protein. That’s the beauty of the frozen meats and veggies, a quick defrost and I have 3/4 of a meal right off the bat.

I go the frozen route a lot for several reasons: 1) I like variety, and the idea of having different things on hand for me to choose from, and 2) it saves me me money- I only cook for one person, and I try to avoid waste.

So there you have it- that is what this RD keeps in her fridge. I try to aim for that 80/20 rule, so yeah I have beer, and pizza rolls, but I have a lot more nutritious foods to go for (that I do go for) more often than pizza rolls and Girl Scout cookies (which were not pictured as they were on the counter being eaten by me at the time the photo was taken).
