January Running Wrap Up

Total mileage January 2016: 105 miles

Total mileage January 2015: 36.2


Those two numbers above are both very telling in several ways.  A year ago at this time, I hated the idea of running.  I had had (what I perceived) a failure of my first marathon, and after that  Christmas came, and then it was cold, and I just didn’t want to run.  Part of the reason my first marathon was a (perceived) failure, was my over training and poor conditioning.  I didn’t even do a race until March, and it was a 5k.

Fast forward to January 2016, my mileage was just shy of tripling from the last January, I have already done a half, and am signed up for two more, a marathon, and an 8k.  In terms of running I feel light years ahead of where I was a year ago.

Part of what helped so much was being in great shape for Chicago last fall, and therefore I didn’t feel destroyed for the next 2 months.  Another thing that has helped a lot is having the ability to run with some great friends 1-3 days per week, that does a great job of getting me out in the elements- even when I just want to lay in bed. 

 As I said I’ve already done a half, and a 5k this year.  Both of which I placed third in my age group, and ran two respectable times considering the less than desirable conditions of both races (ice, snow, cold temps, wind), but most importantly, for both of these events I.Had.Fun!  In addition to having fun, I feel really confident about doing a spring marathon.  Maybe this will turn around to bite me in the ass, but overall I’m enjoying the general feeling of being confident with this training.

 I am following a plan right now that is designed for several purposes: half marathon pr, 5/10k prs or improvements, and a successful marathon (pr).  But I’m not quite to the point where I am in full on marathon training – although that point, it is rapidly approaching.

Taking the placements in my age group out of the equation, I’m still very excited with how 2016 is shaping up, and where it can go from here!

I definitely did not write this with the intention of it being a humble brag (but if it walks like a duck), I really did it to highlight that no matter where you start, you can get better, and once you start you can continue to get better. 




  1. Good job! You motivate me, because I’m actually starting to enjoy running too 🙂 I’ve ran 7 miles in the last 3 days so I feel like an official runner now! I’m trying!

      1. Thank you! I’m excited, and training so far has been good, I’ve felt great since Chicago. I definitely feel this is the best training base I’ve ever had going into a marathon.
